ELM is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

ELM Risk & Safety Institute

The “Institute” is the main educational vehicle used in the ELM educational system. The Institute drives healthcare providers to analyze and question everyday practices and situations using case-based learning. Each ELM course uses actual clinical cases to educate providers on common medical-legal concepts which most frequently result in errors that cause harm to patients and compensable damage to organizations.

The courses are accessible from any internet connection using a web browser. With a self-selected username and password, participants will register and log into the course through a customized URL, which can be embedded on your websites or intranets for easy access. Upon authentication, the user is greeted with an interface featuring a welcome page. The interface is modeled to provide a highly functional, yet appealing, environment.

ELM Risk & Safety Exchange

“Exchange” combines email, the web and CME to create a robust offering that seeks out and draws the user into the classroom. Every other week providers are sent the clinical situation and quiz questions in email, they then review the situation and click to continue on to review the principles of the case and to attend a brief test. Exchange compliments an existing ELM program nicely in that it provides a bi-weekly reminder to return to attend courses and obtain CME.

ELM Risk & Safety Audit

Find out where risk exists in everyday practice with ELM’s auditing services. The ELM audit team will meet with high-risk facilities or departments to identify where during the course of practice mistakes are being made. ELM will then develop specific materials to help your organization target these identified problem areas.

ELM Risk & Safety Intervention

Address immediate needs using ELM “Intervention,” this program allows you to pull problem providers into a classroom and specifically target them with materials to address their specific deficiencies. ELM Intervention programs can be delivered using the online course platform or in live sessions, depending on the specific needs of your organization.

ELM Risk & Safety Extract

Fuel change by providing risk managers and department coordinators with access to the ELM case library. Subscription to this service allows designated subscribers to “google” search the ELM case library for cases matching their criteria, i.e. someone needing case material for grand rounds on shoulder dystocia. They input the search keywords and the database returns all of the cases matching those keywords. It is similar to a Lois or West Law system, in that you can locate specific cases and issues, but the results return the actual ELM educational case, not simply the abstract of the case, so includes test questions, clinical situation and discussion, the issue and principle called out, etc. This is a valuable add-on to an existing ELM program, something a risk manager would be able to use to create “dirt-world” education programs or address specific issues.

Branded Case of the Week

The Case of the Week newsletter is a weekly emailed newsletter; because it is not a CME activity your organization can brand the newsletter using custom colors, graphics and logos. It provides a nice “teaser” for the ELM courses, is often used to initiate the ELM experience and serves as a gentle reminder to return to complete the CME courses.

Specialized Seminars (“Train the Trainer”)

Members of the ELM editorial board are available for specific seminars to “train the trainer,” allowing the teaching physicians and risk managers an opportunity to learn from an educational expert how to present the medical-legal material in an effective manner to their groups.
